Shepherd's Pen
Address: 229 London Road North (A23) Post Code: RH1 3BN Location: MERSTHAM OS Ref: TQ 290542 (Bing Maps) (Google Maps)
CLOSED/DEMOLISHED Closed Date: 1998 In the 1970s this was a freehouse called the Jolliffe Arms, and was a large three bar pub. By 1990 it had changed its name to Detroits, and was decorated with loads of Americana including a car. Seemingly the people of Merstham were not ready for this, and it closed for office development. However, the right hand part of the building reopened as the Shepherd's Pen around 1992. This was a small Victorian bar with a wooden floor and an open fire. A tiny snug area was to be found by the spiral staircase. Real ale was a major feature; however the pub closed in the late 1990s. It is now the Vojan Indian restaurant, although there is a proposal to put housing on the site. Last Updated: 11 Jan 2018
