A 14-bedroom hotel (some with four-poster beds), it was built in 1881 in Scottish Baronial style by William Young, a marine underwriter with Lloyds of London, and is set in 35 acres of countryside. The small black and white tiled Patio Bar has a glass roof, two stories above floor level, making it surprisingly light. One of the bar walls is adorned with a complete set of champagne bottles from half bottle to a Nebuchadnezzar, which holds 20 normal sized bottles. The bar also has seven huge barrels perched above it. Bar food is served from 11-2 and 6:30-10 with the 1881 restaurant open from 7 each evening. Food is freshly prepared and includes local organic items where possible. There is also a very good wine list. The bar is open all day but will require reception to get someone to serve outside the hours shown.
